Gierveld, Heleen. "A CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS OF FUNCTIONS, PROCESSES, AND PRODUCTS IN THE SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION CHAIN." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. This paper summarizes the user needs, functions and information processes in the scholarly communication chain, with an emphasis on the publisher’s role. Furthermore, it presents how product functionality, core benefits, attributes and features relate to each other and how a publisher can seek a competitive edge by differentiation of products and in processes executed. It shows how the functions and information processes are interrelated with the user needs and how an analytical approach can be adopted towards these needs when developing a product.

The Repository Service that we propose is a software module, developed as part of a digital library service system called OpenDLib, that stores and disseminate digital documents. The service is accessible through an http-based protocol, and is generic with respect to the type and contents of information space to be handled. It is thus application-independent and can be implemented as a basic component in many kinds of digital libraries. This paper describes the features that render it broadly applicable.

Tous, Ruben, and Jaime Delgado. "ADVANCED META-SEARCH OF NEWS IN THE WEB ." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. In specific domains, such as newspaper news, virtual libraries, videos or music repositories, the available specialised search engines use to offer to the users more complex interfaces than the generic ones. These interfaces allow to specify constraints about specific features of the resources being searched, as the date of an article, the price of a book or the duration of a movie. On the other hand we have traditional specialised meta-search engines, those engines that help users in their search process by automatically querying a set of specialised search engines available for a given domain. This kind of engines usually offer only a “one-field” interface to the user because of the difficulty to feature the interface particularities of each underlying specialised engine. Our approach allows to overcome this limitation without doing any presumption over the existing technologies. We have developed a practical application, an advanced news meta-search engine that could be easily adapted to cover other domains.

Current standards, like XML and SCORM, and their application in the project are examined. An outlook demonstrates how electronic publishing can be employed profitably for future training purposes in the print and media industry.
Probets, Steve. "CONFIGURABLE PRESENTATION OF FILTERED METADATA." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. This paper looks at how metadata, encoded in XML, can be used to support better resource discovery and extensible information presentation, through the application of standard XML related technologies. By applying XSLT transformation scripts to a structured metadata corpus, the metadata can be presented in differing styles. These scripts can be used to filter and present specific resource descriptions within the corpus. Because the metadata that is presented is a function of the scripts applied to the corpus, altering the scripts can alter how the metadata is presented. This paper looks at the advantages of presenting metadata through the use of dynamically generated XSLT scripts that give a simple yet wide-ranging degree of control over the presentation. The possibility of graphical metadata presentation is discussed. The services described in this paper utilize metadata harvested by the OAI’s Protocol for Metadata Harvesting.

Rosenblum, Brian. "CREATING XML DOCUMENTS FOR ELECTRONIC JOURNAL PUBLICATION." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. The Scholarly Publishing Office (SPO) at the University of Michigan Library works closely with a number of scholarly journals to develop methods and models for online publication. One of our biggest challenges is converting a steady stream of incoming content from a number of different sources and formats into XML to prepare for online delivery. The paper begins with background information on SPO. Then it summarizes the three major stages in our text conversion process: 1) creation and submission of the documents and related metadata; 2) editing and structuring of the document; and 3) transformation of the content to XML. The paper then discusses some of the issues and challenges we face and lessons we have learned, including: our experience working with content providers, managing multiple processes for multiple publications, and a discussion of some of the conversion tools that we use.

Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. This paper addresses the problem of managing, handling and archiving multiple digital manifestations of literary works. The problem was motivated by a real requirement at the National Library of Portugal. It is proposed an approach for the problem based on the concept of digital binding of multiple manifestations of digital works, taking into account their technical and intellectual contents as well as their metadata and possible contexts of usage. It is thereafter described a framework where one can manage and relate several manifestations, bound in a new object containing technical and bibliographic information about the literary work whose manifestations were included. The model is implemented as a repository managed by an XML framework, comprising the data and a metadata model, as also the related editing, management and contents transforming tools.

The progressive research and development in computing and information processing technologies have stimulated the emergence of a new range of electronic documents that are expected to fully exploit the electronic medium’s basic properties of added interactivity and malleability. Coupled with the a±liation with metadata and additional layers of e-contents, e-documents are engaging a new paradigm of users who are actively seeking, selecting and constructing information more than they are ‘receiving’ information contained within e-documents and collections of such documents. This paper reports on the pertinent findings of a research that intentionally took an immense leap in the design and empirical evaluation of an information environment for a new generation of e-documents that is endowed with a set of innovative interactions and electronic enhancements. Apart from presenting a list of essential features of future edocuments that will serve as useful design guidelines, the research advocates that the way forward is not to promote e-documents either as replacements or as alternatives to their print counterparts, but rather to continually strive to focus on the needs of users and on the tasks they will likely seek to accomplish. Future work on designing e-documents should thus focus on designing for media complementarity, and aim to further develop and incorporate tools and features that are most helpful to the user community.

Jutzi-Müller, Ursula. "ETH E-COLLECTION: AN INNOVATIVE PUBLICATION PLATFORM FOR SCIENTISTS – REALISATION OF A DOCUMENT SERVER FOR THE ETH ZURICH BY THE ETH LIBRARY." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. In January 2002 the ETH Library launched the new electronic publication platform ETH E-Collection. This publication channel gives scientists the ideal opportunity to make their publications available easily on the Internet. This collection was designed to bring together documents published outside traditional publishing houses, i.e. grey literature such as research reports, lecture notes, educational materials or newsletters. With more then 2000 documents within the collection (end of July 2002), the pilot phase is over and the new platform is already well known and very much appreciated within the scientific and learning community at the ETH. For the realisation of this document server the departments collection development and IT joined forces to collect documents, create metadata and find the suitable technical implementation. The whole realisation, including technical implementation, was done entirely by the ETH Library. Outside assistance was only required for the web design.

Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. This paper looks at the usability of XML and the TEI Lite DTD for the electronic publication of grey literature by commercial archaeological units. Grey literature is a valuable but underused resource within archaeology and XML would be a useful tool for the publication of field reports as it would allow a quicker response time and a rapid dissemination of information within the fast moving and changing environment of commercial archaeology. It would also allow practitioners to selectively download separate sections of field reports which are of particular importance to them and to improve the searchability of reports on the web.

Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. This paper reports on research undertaken over the past two years into the provision of e-books in the UK focussing upon the issue of bibliographical access. The problems experienced by library and information staff tracing and locating e-books are elucidated. The current position concerning the extension of legal deposit for this electronic format is considered, and a map of the providers of bibliographical information is set out. The establishment of a national strategy for access to e-books is explored through a discussion of the role of a significant new UK body, the JISC e-Books Working Group. The group has a specific remit covering bibliographic access and the potential impact of this group upon the present model of bibliographic access is also discussed. The paper poses a range of questions designed to encourage further international debate on this aspect of e-book accessibility.

Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. Security is a key requirement in multi-user hypermedia systems, where the ability of different users to access and manipulate the information depend on their needs and responsibilities. If security policies are specified in terms of individual users and low-level abstractions not related to the hypermedia domain, security administration becomes complex and prone to error. This paper describes how an RBAC (Role Based Access Control) module is integrated into a web server that is treated as a hypermedia system instead of as a set of files, programs and network protocols. This implies the definition of a set of hypermedia related operations that authorised roles can execute on the system objects.
Abascal, Rocio, Beatrice Rumpler, and Jean-Marie Pinon. "IMPROVING INFORMATION RETRIEVAL IN DIGITAL THESES USING METADATA." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. In this paper, we present an approach to improve information retrieval in digital scientific theses. This approach consists in defining and using “metadata” to help the users to find relevant information during search sessions. This research is one part of the CITHER project (Consultation en Texte Integral des THEses En Reseau) developed by the INSA of Lyon (France). CITHER concerns the online publishing of the INSA’s scientific theses. In a first step, CITHER has permitted the distribution of the theses in PDF format (Portable Document Format), via a server of documents. However, this system does not permit to select only the pertinent parts of the theses during a search session. It is necessary to read the entire document to find them. In the first part of this paper, we present the initial structure of a thesis stored in the CITHER’s server. Then, we describe our method to define a new structure of document based on “semantic metadata”. We propose to introduce the concept of ontology to define the semantic “metadata” and to use XML (eXtended Markup Language) to structure the document. To define the semantic “metadata”, we extract the main concepts such as “model”, “theorem”, “method”, “tool”, etc. found in almost all the theses. We formalize these concepts according to an ontology. Therefore, the new model of document includes “classical metadata” (Dublin Core’s, etc) and “semantic metadata”, which are both included in the document by the way of XML tags. This model of document is based on a logical and semantic structure. The information retrieval, in our new format of theses, takes place by the use of XML tags. In the second part of this paper, we will present our prototype and some examples to illustrate our proposition and the results. We will finish this paper with our conclusion and the future propositions to improve the prototype.

In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. In this paper we present a technique to access the contents of large XML documents. This technique can be applied to domains where large amounts of data are handled, on condition that those contents only require to be updated in a scheduled or sporadic way. We have implemented it in a system, named ALEP (Access to XML contents of Large Electronic Publications). First, ALEP preprocess the XML document, then it is used together with DOM API. One of their advantages is that it can be integrated into any software for management XML electronic publications. We have compared ALEP with DOM and SAX API’s improving both, time and space measures, with large documents of size greater than 18 MB megabytes acceding to a hundred of XML elements.

The global economy is currently being transformed from an industrial economy into a knowledge economy where knowledge is the major driving force for wealth generation. The growth of this knowledge-based society is bringing fundamental changes in the production, distribution and exchange of information; almost every socio-economic and cultural institution will feel the effects. Information and communication technologies, especially Electronic Publishing, play a major role in the way information content is being created, distributed and used in today’s society. In parallel, a key challenge in the context of this emerging global information society is the need to provide individuals with skills that will enable them to locate, access, retrieve, evaluate, interpret and act on information, in their professional or personal lives and to become active and responsible citizens, in other words to become information literate. Today, Information Literacy is recognised as making an important contribution to decision making, problem-solving, independent learning, continuing professional development (life long learning) and research. One of the most e±cient ways to achieve this is through the educational system. Information skills acquisition should start at the very early stages of the educational process, at primary and secondary level and then extend up to the tertiary level – further education and higher education. This paper will review some of the concepts of Information Literacy. A brief overview is made of some standards and approaches to acquisition of the necessary competences, as they apply to Information Literacy; these have been produced mainly for the higher education sector.

Kreines, Mikhail G.. "INTELLECTUAL INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES AND SCIENTIFIC ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING: CHANGING WORLD AND CHANGING MODELS ." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. We discuss new information technologies of semantic analysis, search and retrieval of textual information and their influence on the world of electronic publishing. We shell discuss the means and tools for semantic analysis of texts and texts collections for information search and retrieval, for detection of novelty in texts corpora and their usage in a lot of applications. New structures and new models of electronic publishing for efficient solving of existing problems in the fields of information quality, Copy right and effective ways and means of information retrieval are under consideration. In the proposed models the large and authoritative collections of the texts are real bases for the efficient solving of existing problems. So, the owners of the large information collections – universities, research centers and publishers have the key position. The intellectual data analyze uses this collections to make right solutions of the both readers’ and writers’ problems.

Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. In last years the amount of digital documents has increased dramatically. Unfortunately the same did not occur with the structure and organization of the information. Traditionally we built a digital library using a catalog with documents’ meta-information including a conceptual classification and an ontology of concepts. In this document we present a set of modules to help in the task of building and maintaining a digital library. It includes a module to work with ontologies, a set of modules to handle specific catalog formats (like BibTEX), a module to define new catalog formats and a tool to integrate ontologies and multi-format catalogs in a web browse-able knowledge-base.

Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. Most Swedish newspapers have experienced receding advertising revenues during the last years and are now searching for new ways to profit from their online editions. We have conducted three future workshops with both management and end users to envision possible new services that could be profitable for the local newspapers. Furthermore we have conducted an online survey with users selected from a previous study. The objective of this paper is to describe these services and to give a user response to them. We have identified three kinds of services: advertisement services, intermediary services and news services. The results show that the end users preferred the intermediary services and that there is an interest for advertisements in a new setting.
Neun, Winfried. "MATH-NET - THE STATE OF THE ART OF A DISTRIBUTED INFORMATION and COMMUNICATION SYSTEM IN MATHEMATICS." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. The Math-Net Initiative steered by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) tries to improve and to coordinate the mathematical scholarly information in the World Wide Web. Math-Net is a community-based information and communication system in mathematics. It is based on the information which is provided by persons and institutions taking part in Math-Net on their local servers (Math-Net Members). They should make their information resources electronically available in a standardised fashion. Currently the Math-Net activities are focused on three topics: Math-Net Pages, Mathematical Preprints, and Personal Information about Mathematicians. The talk will give an overview about the idea of Math-Net. The Math-Net Page, a standardised portal to the information of mathematical institutions, will be explained in more detail.
Nürnberg, Peter J., and David L. Hicks. "MODELS FOR PUBLISHING ACADEMIC HYPERTEXTS." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. Hypertext has grown rapidly in popularity, from being a relatively obscure concept in the late 1980’s to near ubiquity with the advent and spread of the World Wide Web. Many forms of information are naturally and easily expressed as hypertexts, especially those that draw connections among various works. Academic work is relatively highly structured work, both internally, and in how it is related to existing work. Nonetheless, aside from a few systems that provide simple footnote and reference linking, no serious attempts have been made to publish academic articles in hypertextual form, with robust, first-class structures comprising a large part of the product. Previous investigations into the requirements for supporting the publishing of academic articles as fully functional hypertexts have noted numerous reasons for slow progress toward this goal. In this paper, we look closely at models for publishing hypertexts. We do so by pointing out several axes along which publishing models may differ, providing a systematic way in which to discuss these models. We then examine three particular models, situating them within our framework, and describing some of their implications. Examining these instances allows us to hypothesize more generally about the implications of choices posed by our framework.

Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. The paper presents the experience of our team in using methods for electronic presentation of mediaeval manuscripts in Bulgaria. The advantages of the electronic edition are: - providing high quality of the images - facilitating and widening the access (Slavonic manuscripts and early printed books are spread in different libraries in Europe and former USSR. Because of the scattered holdings of the manuscripts, danger of additional harm, and specific conservation conditions of the fragile and valuable manuscripts, the access to them is strictly limited and sometimes even impossible for specialists). - providing presentation which can be used for comparative research and analysis - presenting material for distance learning Therefore the electronic presentation of the cultural heritage is the only way to make it accessible from everywhere without being harmed. We hope that the experience from this project will will boost future endeavours.
Paepen, Bert, Jan Engelen, Markus Schranz, and Manfred Tscheligi. "OMNIPAPER: BRINGING ELECTRONIC NEWS PUBLISHING TO A NEXT LEVEL USING XML AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. In the last five years the Internet, intranets and search engines have brought unmanageable amounts of information to the average user’s fingertips. Since this growth will only continue, it is vital that users are supported in converting this universe of information into improved productivity and opportunity instead of being swamped and paralyzed. The OmniPaper project is investigating ways for drastically enhancing access to many different types of distributed information resources. The key objective of OmniPaper is the creation of a multilingual navigation and linking layer on top of distributed information resources in a self-learning environment, thus providing a sophisticated approach to manage multinational news archives with strong semantic coupling, delivering to the user more than the sum of the individual service features.
MacIntyre, Ross, Ann Apps, and Leigh Morris. "OPEN WIDE: USING OPEN SANDARDS IN ACADEMIC WEB SERVICES ." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. Despite enormous strides recently, it remains difficult for researchers to find relevant resources that are not ‘flat’ html files and may be hidden within web services. This paper will draw upon recent experiences at the UK’s largest academic data centre providing web services to the education community. Since May 2001 a project has been underway attempting to make the resources more visible by exploiting a number of relevant open standards and initiatives to ensure interoperability, including: Dublin Core, XML, Z39.50, Open Archives Initiative, OpenURL and Collection Descriptions. The aim of the project being to increase the visibility and accessibility of ‘appropriate’ resources. This principally requires focusing on machine-to-machine metadata interchange. This paper documents some of the realities faced when implementing these potentially valuable, though sometimes ‘over-hyped’ technologies.

Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. A Wiki website is a hypertext on steroids. Any user can create or edit any page on the site using a simple web browser, and all information processing is done on the server side. Wiki sites are powerful tools for collaboration in closed work groups, but can also be used for the general public on the open Internet. This paper summarizes the experience from the first nine months of operation of Sweden’s biggest Wiki website susning.nu, including its usefulness in non-profit and commercial applications, in hobby and professional, projects, its social and legal aspects, its relation to geographic information systems, subject information gateways, the establishment of a controlled vocabulary, and its implications on learning, free speech, the price of information, licensing, and copyright. Relevant comparisons to similar projects in other countries are also presented.

Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. The SciX (Open, self organising repository for scientific information exchange) project is funded by the European Commission in order to demonstrate the feasibility of new alternative models of scientific publishing made possible by the Internet. The project builds upon the previous experience of some of the partners in running an electronic peer reviewed journal and in setting up an e-prints archive. The project includes both theoretical work in making a formal model of the scientific publishing process, to be used as a basis for studying the life-cycle costs of alternative business models, and a demonstrator of a functioning e-prints archive.

Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. We have conducted a partly longitudinal study using online questionnaires at four Swedish local online newspapers in two different studies. The objective of this paper is to describe the users’ demographics and reading habits as well as the users’ expectations of current and future issues regarding the online edition. We also discuss online questionnaires having tried three different approaches to receive as many answers as possible. We have found that the subscribing readers of online editions have increased from one forth to more than a half of the audience, and concluded that the subscribers and non-subscribers have different reading habits. The findings also show that almost two thirds of the respondents are men and more than 80% prefer the paper edition of the newspaper. The results indicate an interest for a multimedia paper edition for the future.

"THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TRULY ELECTRONIC SCHOLARLY JOURNAL IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY: CHALLENGES, DIFFICULTIES, AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS ." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. This paper describes the methodology developed and the experience gained in the creation of a dynamic and interactive electronic scholarly journal in an environment with shortage of resources. The work described is based on the concept of extensive communication drew from the theoretical thought in both, communication and information sciences, as well as a hybrid model of the scholarly communication process and the socalled parallel publishing model. The main aim of the project is to provide a prototype, which could be used by existing print journals in humanities and social sciences in similar environments, for conversion into electronic versions. The methodology and strategies developed are an integral part of the prototype.
Borbinha, Jose Luis. "THE DIGITAL LIBRARY: TAKING IN ACCOUNT ALSO THE TRADITIONAL LIBRARY." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. This paper presents an analysis of the problem of the “digital library”, taking in consideration the perspective and requirements of the “traditional library”. The purpose is to help the approach between two extremes of the problem: the well-established communities of the traditional library and the communities working in new involving technological and business models. In that sense, it is proposed and described a model for the digital library based in the generic use cases of: publication; licensing; acquisition; registration; dissemination; searching; access; and preservation. These cases are also related with new emerging issues: genres; actors; identifiers and metadata.
Savenije, Bas, and Jennifer Smith. "THE FIGARO PROJECT: REALISING NEW MODELS IN SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION ." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. Due to a number of problems the traditional scientific journal has become an obstacle for e±cient scientific communication. Several initiatives have been started to realise other ways of scientific publishing, using modern information technology. In several disciplines, however, a relatively large number of scientists still are reluctant to make use of completely new ways of publishing. Two Dutch universities (Utrecht and Delft) and two German universities (Oldenburg and Hamburg) have taken the initiative to set up an infrastructure for academic e-publishing in Europe and to establish a network of content providers making use of this infrastructure. This project, called FIGARO, is a European extension of the Dutch Roquade project together with the German GAP project and is financially supported by the European Commission. The FIGARO project has a number of remarkable aspects. Firstly, it offers a variety of possibilities, which together constitute an expeditious way for gradually changing the publication behaviour of scientists. It aims at creating an infrastructure that conglomerates the swiftness of publication which hitherto could only be realised by grey publishing, with quality judgement without the serious delay of the traditional review procedures. Figaro offers a wide number of facilities to a broad audience, based on a common organisational and technical infrastructure. Secondly, it creates a business model, which distinguishes between the back o±ce (the infrastructure) at one side and a network of front offices (content providers and intermediates for content providers) at the other side. This business model not only guarantees continuous feed back from the users. It also allows content providers to stick to their own brand and brand name, instead of urging them to conform to a publisher’s brand. In short, FIGARO is not a publisher in the traditional sense, but it enables scientists and organisations of scientists to become publishers themselves.
Burnard, Lou, and Sebastian Rahtz. "THE ROLE OF THE TEXT ENCODING INITIATIVE (TEI) IN THE AUTHORING AND INTERCHANGE OF XML DOCUMENTS ." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. The Text Encoding Initiative’s Guidelines for electronic text encoding and interchange original aim was to provide exhaustive recommendations for the encoding of literary and linguistic textual materials. In this paper we suggest that the Guidelines are also suitable for the authoring of new material, such as websites and academic papers. With only slight extensions, they can be used to describe the structure and contents of a website, while their modular architecture readily permits customization for multimedia and hyperlinking behaviours. Despite their ‘book-centric’ nature, the Guidelines are sufficiently flexible to cater for information organized in a completely non-book-like manner. We argue that its non-prescriptive nature makes the TEI a good candidate for mapping amongst other possibly more prescriptive XML schemes. As subject-focussed XML-based schemas proliferate, there will be an increasing demand for a non-specific interlingua for the interchange and integration of digital textual data. Our claim is that its extensive coverage, pervasive take-up, rigorous documentation, and well-thought out class mechanism uniquely qualify the TEI for this key role.
Heimbürger, Anneli. "TIME-SENSITIVE LINKING MECHANISMS ON THE FUTURE WEB." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. In our paper we will investigate the possibility of applying the XML Linking Language (XLink) to time-sensitive applications. In timesensitive applications fragments of documents are to be composed on fly to form a time-dependent document assembly. The multiple linking mechanism specified by the W3C’s XML Linking Language is one way to approach the time-sensitivity problem in wired and wireless applications. Links with multiple endpoints connect not only two but also a set of related nodes. When a user initiates a link with multiple endpoints, he/she can be requested to choose between the available options or automatically shown the most decent destination defined by the user’s time profile. We also introduce scenarios for time-sensitive applications.
Caracciolo, Caterina, Maarten de Rijke, and Joost Kircz. "TOWARDS SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION DISCLOSURE THROUGH CONCEPT HIERARCHIES." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. We report on an ongoing project aimed at providing an exemplary architecture for an electronic dissemination environment for scientific handbooks. We focus on our way of facilitating navigation through and access to electronic handbooks by using a WordNet-like concept hierarchy consisting of synsets that are connected to each other and to external sources by semantic relations for navigational purposes.
Krottmaier, Harald. "TRANSCLUDED DOCUMENTS: ADVANTAGES OF REUSING DOCUMENT FRAGMENTS." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. Quoting parts of a document is a very common task when writing scientific papers. Usually an author cut-and-pastes a source quote to a new document, which inherently causes problems. Transclusions – invented in 1960 by Ted Nelson – are a possible solution: they are a kind of function which returns the data to be included in a new document and also adds some links to and from the original context of the quote. This paper presents some ideas and problems when using transclusions in an existing digital journal environment. The creation process of transclusions with LATEX-macros is described and tools supporting this task are listed in this paper. After uploading a special ‘markuped’ document to the server, a serverprocess is responsible for assembling the content. This includes the transfer of up-to-date content to the client, management of changes etc. Additional navigation (i.e. hyperlinks) is also generated on the server side, therefore users are not forced to use a dedicated browser for the journal articles. Authors and readers of a document using transclusions profit from this architecture and the original context of a quote is just a mouse-click away. The paradigm of transclusions is useful for all participants involved in the creation and reading of articles.
Hynek, Jiri, and Karel Jezek. "USE OF TEXT MINING METHODS IN A DIGITAL LIBRARY." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. The article deals with use of Itemsets classifier based on inductive machine learning in the context of digital library environment. We provide a brief description of a real-world digital library implemented at a power utility. Its implementation and operating experience have motivated our research in inductive machine learning methods for text mining described in the paper. Being inspired by mining of association rules, we have developed a new categorization method named “Itemsets classifier”. By performing various experiments we have proved its ability to surpass some well-known categorization methods, both in terms of precision/recall and efficiency. As the task of classification is closely related to clustering, we have integrated the principles of Itemsets method into a new document-clustering algorithm as well. We are also presenting other Itemsets classifier applications in unsolicited mail filtering and enhancement of the Naive Bayes classifier. Main ideas and experimental results are presented in the paper.
Peig, Enric, and Jaime Delgado. "USING METADATA FOR MANAGING REFERENCES IN THE EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT: METAREF." In ELPUB2002 - Technology Interactions. Proceedings of the 6th International ICCC/IFIP Conference on Electronic Publishing. ELPUB. Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic: VWF Berlin, 2002. In this paper, the METAREF project is presented. It consists in an application that allows University students to read bibliographic references and comment on them. Metadata techniques are used to store the information that the students provide and the design of the application is based on the HTTP protocol. Thus, the application runs like a web service and any web browser can act as user interface. The project is also concerned about the students’ learning process. In this sense, the passive role that students take, relying only on their notes for passing their exams, is analysed, and how METAREF can help them, by encouraging them to take a more active role, consulting and commenting on the references the lecturers propose.
